1. Introduction to the School
1.1 Historical Background
In the central region of Nepal — within the then Nawalparasi district of the renowned Lumbini zone, birthplace of Gautam Buddha, the apostle of peace and non-violence — lies the historic and culturally rich settlement of Kawasoti, nestled below the Shailshikhar hills of present-day Devchuli in Nawalpur (Bardaghat Susta East), bordered to the south by the sacred Narayani River. It was in this social environment that visionary local leaders, committed to educational awakening, planted the seed of truth, welfare, and beauty for academic prosperity and development. Shree Shiva Secondary School was established on Bhadra 1, 2031 B.S. (1974 AD) as a proud symbol of educational progress in this region.
In 2029 B.S., the then Government of Nepal and the Nepal Resettlement Company cleared forest land in Wards 2, 3, 5, and 8 of what is now Kawasoti Municipality (then in Bara, Narayani Zone) and resettled communities under the leadership of Major Prem Bahadur Gurung.
Responding to the need for modern education for these new settlements and surrounding communities, social workers and intellectuals — including Major Prem Bahadur Gurung, Karna Bahadur Gurung, and Indraprasad Bhattarai — established this school as a primary school on Bhadra 1, 2032 B.S. on the land where Shahid Smriti Secondary School now stands. It served Wards 2, 3, and 5 of Shiv Mandir VDC, Ward 5 of Kawasoti VDC, and parts of Pithauli VDC. In 2033 B.S., a temporary building was constructed at the present site and the school was relocated.
Because students had to travel 5 km east to Pragatinagar or about 7 km west to Tribhuvantar Danda for education beyond primary level (Grades 1–5), the school was upgraded and approved to operate as Shiva Lower Secondary School.
Classes continued in the temporary building until 2037 B.S., but rain, storms, and extreme weather frequently disrupted learning. School Management Committee Chair Khushilal Pandey, along with Indraprasad Bhattarai, Shree Prasad Gurung, Karna Gurung, and other respected community leaders, recognized the urgent need for a permanent building and school upgrade. With local volunteer labor and government grants, a twelve-room building facing south was constructed. It was inaugurated on Chaitra 27, 2038 B.S. by then Minister of Finance, Commerce and Supply Dr. Yadav Prasad Pant, and classes began in the new facility.
Responding to community demand, lower-secondary classes were run from 2038 B.S. as a branch of Janajyoti Secondary School, Pragatinagar, and from 2041 B.S. were fully merged into this school — with 11 students appearing in the first School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination that year.
When the district's first campus needed to be relocated in 2045 B.S. to support higher education, this institution played a special role in that transition.
Following national education policy, the school organized a grand Dhanyanchal Knowledge Mahayagya in Magh 2063 B.S. and began Higher Secondary (+2) classes in Humanities and Management from 2064 B.S. Science stream classes for Grades 11 and 12 started from 2075 B.S. The school also serves as an examination center for several municipalities.
Guided by the motto “Quality education for the modern age is our commitment,” the school runs a special class program for children with hearing impairment. Primary and special classes operate in separate buildings, while lower-secondary and secondary programs run in the main campus. Of the school's land, about 1 bigha was sold in 2044/45 for infrastructure; the remaining ~6 bighas support all school activities.
Selected on 2074/03/25 B.S. under the Ministry of Education's Model School Development Program, the school is implementing its Model School Master Plan from 2075 B.S., advancing physical infrastructure as well as academic and administrative reforms. Located in the heart of the Nawalpur region and approved by the Ministry, the school is working tirelessly to develop into a model educational institution of the area — providing quality, accessible, modern, vocational, and technical education supported by adequate resources, through long-term and strategic planning.

The school is located in Nawalpur district — a valley region enclosed by the Mahabharat range and the Chure hills — in the central part of Nepal. Under Nepal's Constitution of 2072 and federal restructuring, the district lies in Gandaki Province and its headquarters municipality is Kawasoti, bordered by Devchuli Municipality to the east, Hupsekot Rural Municipality to the north, Madhyabindu Municipality and Hupsekot to the west, and the Narayani River to the south. The school sits in Ward 2 of Kawasoti Municipality, near the East-West Highway. This municipality is becoming a center of human development. What was dense forest four decades ago has now largely transformed into settled communities.

Ethnic & Cultural Diversity
Once a mini headquarters with several government offices, this area has grown into the district headquarters of Nawalpur — a multi-ethnic, multilingual, multi-religious community rich in cultural diversity. Brahmin, Chhetri, Magar, Gurung, Tharu, Tamang, and Newar communities are prominent, along with Thakuri, Gharti, Kumal, Kami, Damai, Sarki, and others.
Hinduism is the majority faith, with a significant Buddhist population as well. Livelihoods include foreign employment, trade, agriculture, animal husbandry, service, wage labor, and construction.
